Waffle Iron White Bread

Grilled Cheese Waffle

This waffle iron white bread recipe is amazing. It’s a basic white bread recipe developed and sized to fit your waffle iron. Baking bread in your waffle maker requires some adjustments — you’ll be rolling it flat at the end instead of letting it rise in a pan — but it bakes up soft and crusty, with your sandwich ingredients right inside.

Could you throw it in a pan and bake it up in the oven? Yes, you could, but that wouldn’t be nearly as fun. Try this with Grilled Cheese Waffles or another sandwich fave.

Waffle Iron White Bread

Bake up this quick and simple basic white bread recipe in your waffle iron. For real.

    Yeast Formation

    • 1/2 cup warm water
    • 1 teaspoon active dry yeast

    Dough Ingredients

    • 2 teaspoons sugar
    • 2 teaspoons salt
    • 3 cups flour
    • 2/3 cup milk
    • 2 tablespoons butter, melted

      Yeast Formation

      1. Add yeast to warm (not hot) water and let sit until yeast is dissolved; a few minutes.

      Make The Dough

      1. In a large bowl, mix salt, sugar, and  1 cup of flour.

      2. Add dissolved yeast and mix slightly.

      3. Add milk and melted butter.

      4. Slowly add additional flour, a half cup at a time, and mix and add until you have a shaggy dough

      5. Knead for about seven minutes (by hand), adding a little more flour (tablesspoon at a time), until the dough is smooth. If it is still very sticky, continue adding small amounts of flour until smooth and only slightly tacky. You’ll feel it stick a bit, but it won’t be on your hands. If you are using a stand mixer, this part will take less time, but you are still going for a smooth, tacky dough.

      6. Coat in olive oil and let rise until doubled, about an hour depending on the weather. I leave it in the mixing bowl, covered with a kitchen towel.

      7. After the dough has risen, roll out dough and cut 16 squares (for a four-waffle maker) if you are going to stuff the bread for sandwiches and bake it all at once in the waffle iron, or form into 8 8 balls if not (don’t roll out the dough).

      8. Let rest about 10 minutes.

      9. Roll or stretch each piece to shape the dough to fit your waffle iron.

      10. Heat waffle iron according to manufacturer’s instructions

      11. If you are making sandwiches, place ingredients on four pieces of prepared dough, then cover each with another piece of dough. Press with fingers or crimp with a fork to seal the sandwich. You will do this twice, making eight sandwiches.

      12. If you are simply making bread to munch on, you can place the dough balls into the waffle iron.

      13. Close your waffle iron but do not press down. The yeast needs a lot of room to expand! Cook for 5-6 minutes, until the waffle wells are the golden brown color of delicious white bread crust.
